About BriefBank: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is BriefBank?
BriefBank is a free, community-supported resource that collects and redistributes briefs in the area of law, technology, and public policy. BriefBank is housed at the School of Information Managment and Systems and is administered by the Samuelson Law, Technology, and Public Policy Clinic at Boalt Hall School of Law, UC Berkeley. Briefs are generously donated by legal scholars and partner organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Media Access Project .

2. Who funds BriefBank?
BriefBank is funded by the Samuelson Law, Technology, and Public Policy Clinic at the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. BriefBank is housed at UC Berkeley's School of Information Managment and Systems.

3. Who can contribute a brief to BriefBank?
Anyone can! We welcome briefs from all parties interested in technology and public policy. Check our legal notices and privacy policy to understand how we'll use your brief.

5. What file formats do you accept?
We accept briefs in .pdf, .html, and the various Microsoft Word formats.

6. What happens after I submit a brief?

  1. The Samuelson Clinic's legal researchers will review the brief for clarity.
  2. The Samuelson Clinic may reformat the brief (change file type, etc).
  3. The brief will be posted to BriefBank.
  4. The Samuelson Clinic webmaster will email you a confirmation.
  5. If you choose, we'll also add your name to our contributors page.

7. Can I remove a brief after I've submitted it to BriefBank?
Yes. Please email the Samuelson Clinic webmaster.

8. Whom can I contact if I need help?

9. Where are other free brief collections on this subject?
Findlaw houses Supreme Court briefs from the past three years. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, Electronic Privacy Information Center and the American Civil Liberties Union also publish some privacy and technology briefs.
